The Korean giant has really outdone themselves this time, with their latest invention. The Youm Flexy is nothing short of eye-popping device. The prototype models displayed at the CES promised to change the form a Smartphone or Tablet can be manufactured.
The leading Smartphone maker brought a handful of 5-inch demo units, including a phone-like device with a screen that goes all the way to the edges in order to display information like text messages and alerts keeping the user needing to view the entire screen. Another extremely flexible design wraps the bottom side of the phone, yet another design can be rolled out like a scroll.
Samsung is also making use of Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology to give their Smartphone screens a deeper black and increase the contrast ratio with better power efficiency than the LCD displays.
The company was keen to show their upcoming models, following their presentation at the CES, to the media personnel by showing a close-up of the screens displaying still images and videos. Though they were unable to show their devices with touch interactions since the displays required a CPU connection.
The Galaxy S III maker did not reveal the date of when the Youm would reach the market, neither did they provide a price for the upcoming product.
It might appear that Samsung and Nokia have some similarities on the face fof it, but in reality they are different. Nokia in October 2011, had brought unveiled their Kinetic interface technology that allowed the screen to become flexible and controlled aspects of the phone hardware depending on how the users twisted the screen. It appears that Samsung wants to use their own technology to turn parts of the phone that go unused to display information and add interactivity.
This is not the first time that the Korean company has displayed the flexible devices at the CES. In the 2011 show the Samsung had demonstrated flexibility and transparency concepts in their electronic devices with the intent to add them in the future models.
It is possible that in the near future, we will be able to fold our Smartphones and Tablets and place them in our pockets.
